The Japanese attacked the United States in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The devastating attack led FDR to ask Congress for a declaration of war. Congress granted permission for war three days later, officially involving the United States in World War II. In total, 2,403 Americans died and 1,178 were wounded at Pearl Harbor. There were 18 American ships sunk, including 5 battleships. There was no warning, and no one was aware that the attack was going to happen. The United States received a telegram an hour after the attack, that warned them about the imminent threat to their nation, but it was too late. The United States bombed the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki when Japan would not surrender, finally ending the war four years later.
